Someone just asked if the word Expat had positive or negative connotations to me.
Being the sometimes dumb American I used to think it meant British people who are living in America. Once I understood it meant ANYONE who has left their home country to live somewhere else it became positive. Not that the thought about it being the British was negative. ;) It just didn't seem applicable to me in any way until I understood it.
Now that I am one of them, or almost, I am excited about my new moniker and wear it proudly. Like I belong to a special club. And did you know that by the year 2012 there will be about 200,000 of us who hopped on the adventure train???
Going to a country where I will undoubtedly have trouble with the language and customs that are vastly different from mine, feeling like I belong to some special group may help me feel not as alone in the struggles of my adventure.
